Criminal History Record Check Requirement for RPLS
In meeting with legislatively mandated fingerprinting requirements for all professional license holders, all active RPLS and LSLS licensees must complete a one-time, criminal history record check (CHRC) prior to renewing their license this year. The only exceptions to this requirement are currently inactive RPLS or RPLS who are also Professional Engineers and have previously met this requirement as part of their PE renewals. At the August, 2020 TBPELS Board meetings, new fees were approved for Land Surveyors. Application and renewal fees were reduced, duplicate certificate fees were eliminated, exam fees did not change. Refer to: https://engineers.texas.gov/downloads/SurveyorFeesFY21.pdf
The proposed rules implement necessary changes as required by House Bill 1523, 86th Legislature, Regular Session (2019), related to the merger of operations of the Texas Board of Professional Engineers and the Texas Board of Professional Land Surveying into the Texas Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors. April/June 2020 RPLS, RCP and LSLS Exams
The exams have been postponed and combined with the October 2020 exams. COVID-19 continues to impact the TBPELS Agency as well as our State and communities. Due to the recommendations of public health officials, executive orders from the Governor, and directions from our Professional Board, the TBPELS is postponing the Texas April / June 2020 surveying exams until the October 2020 exam date. If you have already paid the exam fee for the April or June exams, the fee will be applied to the Friday, October 16, 2020 exam. If you choose not to sit for the exam in October, then your exam fee will be refunded. The exam registration deadline is July 15, 2020.
TBPELS Office Closed due to COVID-19 Pandemic
In order to do our part in the fight against COVID-19, the agency office building located at 1917 S. Interstate 35, Austin, Texas, is closed for the foreseeable future. If you need to drop off paperwork in person, please use the drop box to the right of the front door. Mail is gathered daily. Processing times for any documents submitted, including public information act requests, will be delayed. Staff is teleworking. Renewal via mail will require an invoice. The board will mail all licensees and firms an invoice. Invoices will be required with any check or money order renewal payments sent via mail.
We understand that past renewals (via mail) did not require an invoice. However, we do appreciate your patience and participation with this new process.
8/20/2019: We’ve moved
On June 16, 2019, Governor Greg Abbott signed a historic piece of legislation that will merge the regulation of the practices of engineering and land surveying into one board. Effective September 1, 2019, HB1523 creates the Texas Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors (TBPELS). Work on the merger of the engineering and surveying boards is well underway.
All land surveyor functions will be moving to the new location at TBPELS the first week of September. September 2nd we will be closed for Labor Day. On September 3rd, we’ll start the moving process. We will do our best to get back online as quickly as possible, but correspondence via mail, email, or telephone may be slow during the transition. The goal is to be fully operational again Monday, September 9, 2019.
After September 1, 2019 all mail should be sent to the new TBPELS address. If you are sending something and you anticipate it arriving on or around September 1st, please use this address:
